2026 NFLD: The Rock…literally

It is immediately apparent as you drive off the ferry that Newfoundland is a very different sort of place. A mix of boreal forests, rocky barrens, and numerous lakes.

Ancient tectonic collisions, and the retreat of glaciers, left behind an incredibly rugged landscape. Rocky outcrops are everywhere, giant mounds of rock reaching skyward. Black spruce and balsam firs all look like they have been constantly battered by winds off the Atlantic, leaned over precariously just trying to survive.

Made our way up to Corner Brook, along the Trans Canada to our first campground. A decent highway, although we were always either going up a long hill, or down a long hill. The highway is mostly three lanes, with passing lanes allocated to the direction of travel that would benefit the most. Clever.

Corner Brook is located in the Bay of Islands, at the mouth of the Humber River. A mostly industrial city, with a pulp and paper mill and fish plants providing the bulk of employment.

We drove out to Lark Harbour, about 50 klm of road that hugs the rugged shoreline.

Bay of Islands

A nice trail hike around Bottle Cove set us up for lunch at Myrtle’s, a tiny restaurant in the harbour, serving up cold beer and tasty homestyle meals. We shared the Myrtle’s Mess...fries, ground beef, onions, mozzarella, dressing and gravy. More than enough food on one plate to stuff both of us.

very thoughtful

One evening we checked out BoomStick Brewing, where we had some amazingly fresh cod that was sooo tasty. The craft beer was also excellent.

One afternoon we drove out to the little town of McIver’s to visit the sister of Edith, who was a close friend of Dale’s parents. Edith passed in 2023, and is buried in the town cemetery. This drive was along the opposite side of the bay, and was just as picturesque. Fog and heavy overcast obscured the views, but still a nice drive. Visited with Daisey, the. Walked over to the cemetery to find Edith’s resting place.

yes...snow on the hills

fog rolled in before some heavy rains

McIver's

We picked up some take out fish and chip dinners, which were tasty, then headed back to camp. Heavy rain on the way back made for a seriously cautious drive. A good stay in Corner Brook, and we are now off to Gros Morne.
