2026 NFLD: a quick stop at Grand Falls

Heading towards Twillingate, we stopped about halfway at Grand Falls for a couple of nights. Sometimes a couple of nights to chill is a good thing, get a little organizing done, then hit the road.

Grand Falls started as a lumber mill town, then NFLD Hydro put in a big hydro electric dam across the Exploits River. As this is one of the top salmon producing rivers in North America, fish ladders were constructed to help the salmon move around the dam.

a very craggy river

These ladders were then improved with the construction of the Salmonid Interpretation Centre. One can now not only learn about the entire salmon spawning journey, but also watch the salmon move through the ladder around the dam. There are two viewing windows built into the side of one of the ladder ponds.

Salmon jump through a series of narrow ponds, which simulate their natural upstream movements along the river. The viewing area gives you an up close view of just how large these fish can get. The centre is certainly worth a visit.
