Under Bench Lighting

So many times when we have left the bed set up, we have inevitably needed to crawl into the black pit of the tunnel between the benches to retrieve something.

It is dark under there, and always pretty confined to be squirming around in. Lighting has been needed for some time, so this little thought went on the mod list.

A couple years back we changed the under cabinet lighting in our kitchen, and as the old stuff was 12 volt based, I saved the bits and bobs in a bag for possible future use in my favourite 12 volt based platform. Sure enough, that day came.

Once I stripped away all the extra bits of the old lighting, I was left with a nice little disc of leds, with a nifty plastic cover that had tiny fresnel diffusers over each led. How perfect. I fashioned a short aluminum bar to attach to each led disc, and this would be used to mount the disc to the bench frame.

I used four discs, each mounted at the front of the bench frame,  intersecting the vertical supports, and facing the rear.

The attached thin wires were perfect to run around the frame to the door side. An illuminated rocker switch was installed low by the washroom door, and I tapped into the power feed of a previous outside step lighting mod.

Although a simple mod, it makes a huge impact when used whether the bed is set up or not. This would make a nice addition to the SC option list.

The question remains though, why did this simple little mod take so long to come to life?

  1. Hmmm, I seem to have 6 feet or so of light tape left over from my front table lighting mod. Hmmm.

    1. Great use for it. Probably would only need about 6 leds for each bench area. Too many leds would feel like landing lights.

    1. Sometimes the simplest mods are the most elusive.
