So we brought the Alto home from storage a week or so early to load it up and get ready for our trip. The weather was cooperating...until the day before we left. A storm dumped 15 cm of snow during a seriously snowy day. Cleaned the vehicles off and the driveway, and by the end of the day the storm had passed. The next morning it was bright and sunny, but damn cold.

By the time we crossed the border it was much warmer, lots of sun, and most importantly, clear dry roads. First stop is always Wilkes-Barre, where we grab a hotel. The next day we headed to Columbia MD, to have a quick visit with our friends Karen and Steve. He has not been well the past couple of years, and is now in the hospital after a fall. Given our route south passed right by, a visit was quick to arrange. Great to see them both, and it certainly lifted our spirits to be together. We have had so much fun camping with them over the years...always lots of chatting and laughing.
We had a Harvest Host microbrewery booked in Virginia for the next night, but a cold snap blanketing the area soon changed those plans to the warmth of a hotel. Temps of -5C (24F), is a tad too cold for any sort of comfort. A hotel in Danville sure hit the spot. We then headed to Lee State Park in SC. Along the way we once again drove through the little town of Society Hill, home to Sale's favourite water tower. Naturally we stopped so Dale could have another look, and take a few pictures of the eclectic shops.
A small, but very nice park, it is well maintained with big sites nestled among the pine trees. A newly renovated comfort station was absolutely gorgeous, lots of shiny tile work, and its own heat pump made the self contained washroom/shower a toasty little enclave from the coolness outside.

We really lucked out on the driving weather, sunny and dry every day. Made it to Tybee Island in Savannah, back to a campground we have stayed at a few times. Easy access to a nice beach and the downtown makes it an ideal location. Three days there, great to recharge after a few days of eating up the kilometres. Scooted into downtown Savannah, checked out the beach, and had a nice meal at Salt Island Fish & Beer, a fave spot of ours.

As we were squaring gear away to leave the next day, we had a great conversation with a recently retired couple from Florida. They are on a five week road trip up to North Carolina with their new Class A motor home. A shakedown cruise for them, and they were quite keen to hear about how we travel. Alway fun to chat with your campsite neighbours
