2019 SouthWest: The Q.

Quartzite was a mining town until the mining stopped, and was the verge of becoming a ghost town, when it became a meet up and trading location for rock swappers and gem collectors.

It is a hard scrabble town that appears to have attracted people whom have opted out of living in other places (for unknown reasons) seeking an alternative lifestyle, and are OK with making a living however they can.  One local said that it seems to attract a lot of types whom believe in the spiritual and healing power of rocks and crystals, and as she put it, other ‘wackadoodles’.

literally tons of rocks

As an example, there is a used bookstore in town that is a popular spot, and we were informed that the store owner is usually nude, but wears a strategic sock most of the time...how very considerate.  Needless to say, we did not drop in because that day we were not feeling up to seeing a naked old man...

As Quartzite is surrounded by huge tracts of BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land, which offers free dry camping for up to 14 days, it has become a huge meet-up place for organizations. BLM land is similar to Crown owned land in Canada.  RVer’s from all over arrive to attend massive gatherings, like the annual RV Show every January, where it’s estimated over 150,000 attend...the biggest known RV gathering on earth.

We were glad that we were here during the quiet time, and had a huge swath of BLM land to ourselves, with only a few trailers within sight.

Having a vast expanse of view all to ourselves was an interesting experience, certainly something to be said for dry camping...in the right spot of course. The town turned out to be much more than we expected...and chatting with locals was the best part of it all.
