2019 SouthWest: cacti and burros...

On our way to Sedona, we stopped at Lake Pleasant Regional Park, north of Phoenix, just to break up the drive a bit. Like it’s sister park, Usery Mountain, it is a well run park with lots of excellent facilities. Maricopa County sure knows how to run its parks!

Lake Pleasant is a water reservoir, part of the Central Arizona, Project waterway system. A large dam, which really looks a lot like a dike, gathers and holds water, that is then distributed as needed through an extensive canal system throughout central Arizona.

We were able to get in a couple of nice hikes through the park. We did part of the Pipeline Canyon Trail, and the Wild Burro Trail, which was the most thrilling because we were fortunate to see a pair of wild burros.  Early explorers and miners brought them into the state and at one time there were up to 10,000 in Arizona and now residing wild in the state are approx. 3,000 burros, and we were told by a young Ranger that approx. 750 are within the park boundaries.

so neat to see the burros

lots of colour starting to appear

Because of the increased rain this winter, the lake is at it’s highest level it has been in many years, and the hills are quite lush and more green than usual and the desert flowers are in abundance.  Not only are the assorted cacti a joy to look at, was the vibrant colours of the wildflowers are a real treat.

Lots of friendly people in the park, and we have had several nice chats. Many have asked where we have been and where we are headed, which we told them Cottonwood and Sedona, and they have offered all sorts of tips about places to go and great spots to have a bite to eat.  Really good to get these local perspectives.
