2026 NFLD: Bonavista Peninsula ~ Route Alto 80

Short drive to our next destination, Lockston Path Provincial Park. Located in the Bonavista Peninsula, it was a good base to explore the whole area.

The park is nice, and definitely a bit remote. Still not that remote in reality as after we set up we took a drive into Trinity, which was only about twenty minutes away. Trinity is a very picturesque harbour town, with narrow roads that follow the shoreline, and others that connect over the hills a bit inland. Lots of colourful older houses, most of them lived in and well maintained. A number of craft shops, a few restaurants, and a few big churches.

The day after our Zodiac tour, which is the next blog entry, we woke up to fog and a light drizzle, as was forecasted. Decided it would be wise to head up to Elliston and Bonavista to see the puffins, another item on our must do list. Elliston has the official puffin viewing site, and it did not disappoint.

Puffins are an amazing bird, and are actually a descendent of the auk family. Damn they are cute, cute as a button. Their faces and mannerisms are so full of character. Very easy to let your mind imagine what they are thinking or would be saying if they could talk. Lots of them to look at. They hang around the edges of the cliffs, and people quietly move about observing them and taking photos. So lucky to see so many, as sometimes they only congregate on the other side of the rocky island just off the cliffs.

On our way to Bonavista, we stopped at Spillars Cove and walked the trail to see the chimney rock stacks. We did see some, but the rain picked up and made the walk a soggy affair. We decided lunch at a cafe was a better option.

The Lovely Grand Bakeshop served up a nice lunch menu. Dale had a favourite of hers, carrot ginger soup, and I had a loaded turkey sandwich. A couple of flat whites also made their way to our table. All excellent.

Wandered the town a bit. Nice to see many of the older homes and buildings have been well cared for, and of course, many different colourful exteriors. Looks like the rain will be here for a couple of days, so tomorrow is shaping up to be a chill out day.

As expected, it was a dull day full of drizzle. Tidied up a few things in prep of heading out tomorrow, then took another drive into Trinity. The cute little harbour town deserved another look. Explored some of the smaller streets, enjoyed the well kept homes, then drove over to Trinity East. An even smaller town, but nice as well. We grabbed an early dinner at the Brightside Bistro. A nice menu, with some creative dishes, it turned out to be a real treat. Sticky toffee pudding for dessert capped off an excellent meal.
